The African Crested Porcupine is the continent's largest rodent, instantly recognised by its impressive display of long black-and-white quills.

Primarily active after sunset, these animals spend their nights feeding on roots, bulbs, bark and fallen fruit before returning to underground burrows at dawn. When threatened, they raise their quills, rattle their hollow tail quills as a warning and, if necessary, charge backwards to defend themselves.
